The Lucille Lortel Theater has enlisted Yorke Construction to renovate and expand its newly acquired carriage house in Chelsea, NYC. Nestled between two landmarked buildings, the project involves demolishing unpermitted additions, remediating asbestos, constructing a new third-floor addition, and transforming the space into a state-of-the-art performing arts studio.
At the heart of the renovation is the ground-floor studio and lobby—true centerpieces of the space. Patrons are welcomed by a striking bronze Ellison door, while a bespoke millwork package sets the tone for the studio’s refined aesthetics. Equipped with a full suite of AV, stage lighting, and engineering systems, the space is designed to accommodate a diverse range of performances. Meanwhile, new MEP systems ensure a comfortable and energy-efficient environment.
The second-floor lounge exudes character, providing a relaxed setting alongside essential amenities, including restrooms, theater storage, and a phone room. The third floor is dedicated to the theater’s administrative functions, featuring modern office spaces enclosed by demountable glass partitions. New storefronts at the North and South Terraces seamlessly connect to outdoor gathering areas, enhancing the foundation’s workspace with natural light and fresh air.
This project is currently underway and anticipated to be completed in 2026.
